More Success for Emily and Angel at British Schools

16/03/2009

Only a week after passing the elite grade TNAG's Emily Crowe and Angel Kenzitt represented the East at the British Schools Gymnastics Championships in Newcastle where they competed in the junior section. This meant a complete change of routines for the girls from last week with only a few sessions to perfect the new moves. This was also the first BG event to be held on the Code of Points introduced after last year's Olympic Games and so everyone was in unchartered territory.

The girls joined with Alice Foster and Charlotte Mwayi from Pipers Vale and Alice Codling from Bury Spectrum in the team event. The team started their competition on floor where both girls contributed strongly to the team total with two lovely routines - Emily scoring 11.9 and Angel 11.85. Next the girls moved to vault where they both went cleanly through their piked Tsukahara vaults for scores above 12. The team had the two toughest pieces last - bars and beam where competitions are won and lost! Bar work is being made increasingly tough under the new code with even harder crequirements for the girls to fulfill. However, both girls put in clean routines with Emily having a particularly impressive routine which earned her 9.45. Finally, the testing balance beam where Emily was solid and stable and Angel put in a very difficult routine which scored well despite one mistake.

The team finished in a very creditable 5th place. The winning teams were made up almost entirely of girls born in 1997 where the East only had one such gymnast in Alice Foster, who was the team's top finisher in 4th overall. The other girls, including the TNAG duo were all a full year younger and so the good result is all the more impressive in view of this. Emily posted a very strong individual score of 45.1 which placed her 12th overall, top of the pile of the 1998 born girls that participated. Angel also had a good individual result, placing 24th. This shows the girls can easily make the step up to full FIG difficulty.

As the girls are so young they will both be eligible again for the junior section next year where the team will be more experienced and hopes to push for a medal.

Well done girls!
