TNAG ELITE STARS GAIN NATIONAL RANKINGS

10/11/2008

NEWS FROM NATIONALS

Three of TNAG’s elite squad brought their busy competition season to a close with the biggest event for them of all – the national voluntary age group finals held at the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre on 8th and 9th November. The girls had qualified by virtue of their excellent results at the regional heats in Ipswich in September.

Lucy Jarvis competed on the Saturday in the level 4, age 9 competition. She was reserve for the East regional team but competed as an individual for TNAG. In her biggest ever competition so far Lucy put together a solid sequence of scores with only the one major error on beam which seemed to have been order of the day for most of the competitors! She posted particularly strong scores on bars (11.3) and floor (11.7) to contribute to an overall total of 44.5 which placed her equal 32 out of the 51 competitors. When combined with her score from compulsory level 4 earlier in the year Lucy has an overall national ranking of 29th in the country which is a great achievement. Congratulations Lucy.

Angel Kenzitt and Emily Crowe competed on the Sunday at level 3, age 10. Angel had placed 5th at regionals and so competed as an individual as well as being reserve for the team, and Emily had placed 3rd and so was part of the East team. Emily had been very unwell in the immediate lead up to the event and was unsure on the day that she would be able to take part at all and so just to survive the competition was an achievement in itself. She started on the hardest part of all, the beam where she did very well to control her wobbles and stay on, scoring 11.8 and continued to build her scores across the pieces with just one error on the vault. Her best performance probably came on bars where she scored a strong 11.75.

Angel had an excellent competition without any major mistakes and put together a very solid set of scores with particular high points of 12.25 on beam, 12.225 on vault and 12.1 on floor. The differences between the top 30 or so girls were so small that every tenth counted and Angel was determined to give absolutely nothing away!

Angel’s total score of 48.025 placed her 16th overall and combined with her compulsory 3 ranking puts her 16th in the country overall. Emily’s total of 47.225 placed her 23rd and 17th in the combined rankings.

The East team took the silver medal in the team competition with both Angel and Emily getting well deserved medals as part of the team.

The preparation last week leading up to this competition was less than ideal for all of the girls and coaches, with injury and illness having hit the gym and considerably disrupted their training and all three of the girls did very well to perform as well as they did on a big stage with this in mind. To have two gymnasts in the top 20 overall nationally in our first year is fantastic for them and for the club and with the girls all moving on to even tougher tests next year they have a very good base to build from.
