Medals galore at Norfolk champs
07/09/2008
The Norfolk Academy picked up a fantastic total of 14 medals and had 6 county champions crowned at the Norfolk girls voluntary levels and FIG championships on Saturday 6 September.
For a number of the 19 TNAG entrants, this was their first "proper" competition and for many others this was their first competition since joining the Academy and thus were performing a full set of new routines for the first time.
TNAG had competitors at all levels save for the full FIG level and were the only club to have such a strong representation across the board.
At level 2, TNAG's Summer-Jade Kenzitt won gold and Sarah Kett, making her first competitive start in a whole year, won the silver. At level 3 out of age, Chloe White won gold showing her usual disply of class and artistry. The level 3 in age girls, Emily Crowe and Angel Kenzitt, had a fantastic battle between themselves whilst treating the crowd to some unbelievably complex and difficult work posting the highest two overall scores of the event - this time Emily picked up the gold and the overall level 3 championship trophy, with Angel just over a point behind in second.
TNAG had a total of 7 competitors at level 4. In the in age 9 year old section, Charlotte Taylor, after making a great start on her first two pieces of apparatus unfortunately sustained a nasty ankle injury after a fall on her beam dismount and sadly had to withdraw from the event. Charlotte collected a bronze medal for her efforts and after a trip to casualty rejoined the gang for the after party! Lucy Jarvis despite uncharacteristic mistakes on beam strolled to the level 4 in age title by some 7 marks over the second placed gymnast. In the out of age category Polina Polyakova had the highest difficulty level of all of the level 4s and posted a great score to win the out of age gold medal and overall level 4 trophy. Naomi Loome, in her first competition since returning to gymnastics after a long time out, picked up a fantastic silver medal and Grace Asworth won bronze making it a clean sweep for TNAG in that category. There was also room to spare with Georgia Bunn 4th and Jessica Brasted 5th; both girls showing massive improvements on their previous level of work and Georgia's floor routine was one of the highlights of the day.
Level 5 saw the most competitors and TNAG had representation in both the 9 plus and under 9 categories. At 9 plus Melissa Brown took the bronze medal and Shyla Norkett the gold. Shyla trains only 6 hours per week and thus did fantastically well to go cleany through her routines and win the title. Poppy Brown also competed in this section finishing 5th. In the under 9s section TNAG's youngest competitors stepped up to the challenge. Tamzin Impey picked up a brilliant bronze medal showing a great set of routines demonstrating the fabulous improvement she has made in the last 6 months since moving to TNAG. Bethany Harmer only started serious gymnastics training in February and has made unbelievable progress since that time. She took the silver medal in this category. TNAG also had Harmony Kenzitt in 4th, and Modupe Obideyi in 5th.
Sara-Jane Inglis, Head Coach of TNAG, remarked "Overall, this was a great day for the Academy and it was a proud moment to see us competing on the county stage with such strength in depth. We picked up 3 times more medals than all of the rest of the competing clubs put together, and all this from a club only in its 8th month of existence surely bodes well for the future. We are not complacent, however, as there are lots of area we need to improve on and we fully intend to do just that."
Well done to all of the competitors and thank you to those who came along to support the girls and to all of the coaches who helped out. Good luck to the girls who now move on to regional and national events starting with the Alpha Factor national invitational in Wiltshire next weekend. Full results from this weekend's event will shortly be available to download in the downloads section.
