News from Bill Slater trial on 27 July
28/07/2008
The Norfolk Academy of Gymnastics held its first competitive event on Sunday 27 July, when 9 of the club’s top gymnasts competed in an internal trial event to decide who will represent the Academy in the Bill Slater team championships to be held in October in Newcastle.
The facility was set out as a competition venue for the first time and worked very well, hopefully standing us in good stead to hold further events in the future. Despite the incredibly hot day, the event was well supported by our members and this, along with the high quality judging from our external judges, helped to give the girls the feeling of a real competition. A big thank you to everyone who came along to watch and Josie and Claire, along with our own Jan, for judging.
For most of the girls this was the first time they had competed under the very demanding full FIG rules. These are much tougher than the rules they normally work under in their age group levels. This meant that most had added new difficult skills to their routines and a few mistakes along the way were only to be expected – the girls and their coaches have 3 months to get these routines perfect prior to the actual competition itself.
The results of the trial and the gymnasts selected to represent TNAG at the Bill Slater team championships 25-26 October are as follows:-
- Angel Kenzitt (43.3)
- Summer-Jade Kenzitt (43.2)
- Emily Crowe (43.00)
- Sarah Kett (42.05)
- Chloe White (41.4)
- Polina Polyakova (39.7)
Reserve : Naomi Loome (38.45)
For the remaining competitors, Lucy Jarvis (36.95) and Grace Ashworth (36.45), the event was more about a chance to run through their levels routines for September rather than a real shot at a team placing as neither yet has the difficult skills needed to score well at FIG level. However, hopefully the experience will have been of benefit to them and we fully expect them both to be challenging for team places in future years.
Naomi Loome returned to gymnastics in January after some 3 years out of the sport and this was her first competition since that return. She made the decision on whom to select in the 6th place, very difficult but just missed out on this occasion. Naomi has made massive strides in the last few months but just didn’t have some of her more difficult skills ready for competition. We have very high hopes for Naomi both in the levels competitions in the autumn and for her to compete successfully at FIG level next year.
Special mention should also go to Summer who had a fantastic day including landing her tsukahara vault for the first time in competition and giving her usual sparkling presentation, pushing her sister very hard at the top of the leader board. Sarah Kett has not competed for almost a year after changing clubs and having a hard time with injuries. She had a complete set of new difficult routines and went through cleanly, including a piked tsukahara vault and a beam routine that included 3 different somersaults. Polina Polyakova was judged on video having performed her routines almost faultlessly 2 weeks ago before going on holiday. Her place in the team is a just reward for her incredible work rate and fantastic attitude in training.
Top scorers on the different pieces of apparatus were
Vault – 1. Angel Kenzitt 13.15, 2. Emily Crowe 12.45 3 Sarah Kett 12.05
Bars – 1. Summer Kenzitt 9.25, 2. Chloe White 9.15, 3. Sarah Kett 8.6
Beam – 1. Angel Kenzitt 11.4, 2. Summer Kenzitt 11.2, 3. Emily Crowe 10.9
Floor – 1. Emily Crowe 11.65, 2= Angel Kenzitt, Summer Kenzitt, Sarah Kett 11.1
Well done to all the girls and thank you again to everyone who helped out and came to watch.
