GREAT RESULTS FOR EMILY AND POLINA AT THEIR FIRST BRITISH AS BOTH QUALIFY FOR FINALS

Emily Crowe and Polina Polyakova became the first gymnasts from the Norfolk Academy ever to take part in a full British championships as they contested the espoir competition at the GL1 leisure centre in Gloucester on 5th June.

The competitors, aged 11-13 had all qualified for this event by passing the very difficult compulsory 2 elite grade or by receiving the qualifying score at last year’s challenge cup and therefore, as expected, the standard was very high with lots of hugely difficult gymnastics on show. The temperature in the arena was scorching and all of the girls did well to get through the competition in one piece.

Emily and Polina both had highs and lows to their competitions – Polina made an excellent start with a clean classy bar routine and a very solid performance on beam which scored a huge 12.75 but suffered mistakes on the difficult range and conditioning set to keep her overall score and ranking down, whilst Emily had less of a good start with errors on bars and an uncharacteristic fall from beam but picked up with an outstanding floor routine for a massive score of 13.4 and also performed very well on range.

Overall, Polina placed 28th which is a brilliant achievement in her first ever national championships and she knows she could have been pushing the top 15 without the falls on range. Polina’s scores on the four FIG pieces were excellent and she has a real chance to make a name for herself this year and next.  Emily finished an impressive 11th overall and again, knows she could have been significantly higher with a clean competition. The fact that she finished so highly even with mistakes outlines her potential for future events.

The best news was saved until last with the declaration of the event finalists at the very end of a long hot day. Polina held on for a place in the beam final and Emily qualified in an excellent second place for the floor final. The apparatus finals will take place alongside the senior and junior finals at the Guildford Spectrum on 4th July where Polina and Emily will once again make history for the club.
