REGIONAL BRONZE FOR MELISSA
10/05/2010
REGIONAL BRONZE FOR MELISSA – AND STRONG PERFORMANCES ALL ROUND FROM THE ACADEMY GYMNASTS
Ten year old Academy gymnast Melissa Brown took her first ever individual regional medal on Sunday when she won bronze in grade 11 for her age group at the Regional Club Grades finals in Ipswich.
Melissa looked one of the class gymnasts in the field from the start and hit the two most testing pieces, bars and beam almost faultlessly for scores in the twelves to get her competition off to a great start. Despite a problem with her floor routine which cost her dearly and led to a low score on what is normally one of her strongest pieces, Melissa composed herself and did two good vaults which scored highly enough to grab herself a medal position. Congratulations to Melissa and her coach Jan.
Melissa was the last of seven TNAG gymnasts competing in the finals. In the grade 14 8-9 years competition Miriam Lowe placed a fantastic fourth in what is always a very tough category. Mim was just 0.15 short of the bronze medal in her first ever regional event. Abigail Gardiner also competed in this grade and performed very well to place 11th.
At grade 13, 9-10 years, Charlotte Donnelly, Laura Glover and Naomi Bash competed for the Academy, all three for the first time at regional level. Charlotte put together a very solid sequence of scores to again place fourth, just outside of the medals. Laura and Naomi also performed very well to place seventh and eighth respectively.
Poppy Brown was the sole representative for the club at grade 12, in the 11/12 plus age group. The standard at the grade was strong and Poppy suffered a mistake on beam but otherwise performed cleanly, to finish in sixth position.
A big well done to all of the girls and their coaches.
