ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010

Polina Polyakove and Emily Crowe were the first two Academy gymnasts to contest an English championships, when they took part in the espoir competition (for girls aged 12-13 years) at New College in Leicester on Friday 5 March.

A very strong field had assembled for the competition. For Polina, this was her biggest event to date and despite a painful foot injury which meant her routines had to be considerably watered down, she was keen to gain valuable experience from taking part in such a big event. Polina performed well across all pieces of apparatus and had a very good competition. She went cleanly through her beam routine, safely negotiated the vault which had been causing difficulties due to the foot injury, and finishes with a stylish bar routine which gave her the sixth best score on that piece in the competition. Polina finished in a very creditable 18th position.

Emily has very high expectations for 2010 and started in great style here, holding her own amongst the very top espoirs in the country. She begun with a stylish beam routine in which she negotiated her difficult acrobatic skills with ease and hardly a wobble. Her difficulty level of 5.0 was the highest of the day and her final score of 12.0 saw her just miss out on a medal, finishing fourth on this piece. Floor is Emily’s strongest piece and she performed her routine excellently and her score of 12.6, although a little lower than she has received lately, saw her top the standings until the last couple of rounds of the competition where she was pushed down to seventh place. Emily performed her vault easily but unfortunately suffered a fall on bars on a new element. However, despite the error, Emily has made vast steps forward on this apparatus in recent months and the quality of her work on the apparatus was excellent. In contention right to the very end, Emily eventually finished in a strong eighth position. She was the top first year espoir in the competition; all seven of the girls ahead of her were a year older and more experienced.

The girls’ coach Sara-Jane Inglus said, “This is a fantastic start to the year for both girls. They competed exceptionally well and can certainly build on this experience. Both have many more new skills to add to their routines across the pieces and are of course hoping to peak at the British Championships in June”.
